    PETA Ads to Target McDonald’s

    05.01.09 |

Article In The Wall Street Journal

The animal-rights group PETA is preparing a campaign against McDonald’s Corp., hoping to pressure the fast-food giant into changing the way millions of chickens are raised and slaughtered.

With its campaign, budgeted at about $500,000 this year,PETA is hoping to spur industry-wide change by pressuring an iconic chain that uses three billion eggs and 290 million chickens a year.

McDonald’s said it is committed to “humane treatment of animals by our suppliers in every part of the world where we do business.” And some members of McDonald’s animal welfare advisory board said they will support the chain in resisting PETA’s demands.

A decade ago, PETA, or People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, staged a similar campaign against McDonald’s. After nearly a year of protests, McDonald’s got suppliers to stop a practice known as forced molting, in which hens near the end of their productive life are deprived of food to jolt them into laying more eggs.

McDonald’s said its decision wasn’t driven by PETA’s activism. But the move sharply curtailed forced molting in the U.S.

This time, PETA wants McDonald’s to demand its suppliers stop raising hens in small wire cages and abandon the standard industry slaughter method, which involves hanging live chickens upside down, stunning them with electrified water and then cutting their throats.

Other fast-food chains targeted by PETA have had mixed responses. Rick Maynard, a spokesman for KFC, a division of Yum Brands Inc., dismissed the group’s pressure as “publicity stunts” that “have no material impact on KFC sales.”

But Burger King Holdings Inc. touts an award it received from PETA last year to recognize improvements in animal welfare.

“We have a good working relationship with PETA,” spokeswoman Susan Robison said.

    Little Red Wagon Foundation

    03.19.09 |

Hi this is Zach Bonner of the Little Red Wagon Foundation. I am going to finish up my walk starting this May 11th in Atlanta. I will be walking 665 miles from Atlanta to Washington DC. I use the walk to raise awareness to the over 1.3 million homeless kids living in this country. I also raise money through pledges and sponsorships. I will do 2 projects with the money that I raise one is to redo 6 apartments in Washington DC for kids that can no longer stay at home and without help they most likely will end up on the street. I like the program because they give them an apartment for free and food allowance and all they have to do is work 15 hours a week and stay in school. They have 18 months to save up money and complete school. A lot of the kids go on to college or trade school. The 2nd thing I am doing is building a playground for an emergency foster care center that will house 60 kids. It is so siblings can stay together till a foster home is found. I am hoping to get 1000 kids to come walk in DC with me for my last mile from the White House to the Capitol. I thought maybe Ms. Anderson could put something up on her blog about the walk and help me spread the word. If she wanted she could come with her boys and walk. That is about it. We are doing our 24 hour event next weekend. That is where we get 50 kids from across the state to come together and simulate being homeless for 24 hours. We sleep in boxes and assemble backpacks with food and supplies for homeless kids. We are doing 400 this year that will go out to different agencies that help kids along my walk route.
I hope you are all doing great.
